SOLE TEACHERS

Sugata Mitra - Self Organised Learning Environment

At present I am talking with five classroom teachers (New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States) who are wondering if Sugata Mitra's ideas about Self Organised Learning Environments are a step towards engaging with teaching and learning in a new way.

Teaching and learning that embraces; play, passion and purpose.

Teaching and learning that is about; creating, change and collaboration.

Teaching and learning where knowledge is a verb. Where knowledge has energy!

Teaching and learning that is knowledge creating / knowledge building.

I really want to explore:
1.  What does SOLE look like, sound like in our schools and classrooms.
2. What are the differences in program planning, implementation and outcomes?
3. Is it possible to use the 21st Century Fluency Project 2013  unit planner for planning SOLE?
4. How do we work towards and remain aligned to evidence-informed practice

Questions that may be worth considering if you are wondering about how to share the effectiveness / impact of SOLE with your colleagues.

1. What attracted you to the idea of SOLE?
2. How did you think your students would react? How did they react?
3. What benefits can you see in this approach for the students? / For you?
4. What are the down sides?
5. Has exploring with SOLE challenged how you think about other aspects of your practice? If so how?
6. In what ways (if any) does SOLE change the relationships between you and your students / between one student and another?
7. Why SOLE?

A Primary School Teacher's Classroom Perspective on SOLE

I popped into my colleague, Norge's  classroom today. Oh my goodness!
Since exploring SOLE,  Norge and her students are doing sommersults in their approach to future building their learning.

Norge has taken the above questions to her students and together they have been reflecting on them.

Watch this space, they are going to share some of their thinking.

What I can tell you is Norge and her students have decided to rename their classroom and have created the following poster which embraces what they believe about self organised learning.

 I am  seriously inspired!
(apologies the image is blurry, will wear my glasses next week and snap another image)

  1. I will be implementing a SOLE with 6th/7th grade math students... The plan is to give them three 40 min periods over the course of 6 school days to explore specific pieces of the current content we are covering. The main goal is to dig deep into the content to find examples of real world application and then take that understanding to create a display of that understanding. I look forward to sharing out as we move forward.

    1. Sounds fantastic!
      How is the display going?
Norge (primary school teacher) told me she would be reflecting on the above questions with her students. Pretty smart SOLE thinking I thought!
I'm pretty excited about your next update.

  2. I am curious about the internet safety issues. I love the concept of SOLE but worry about how to deal with kids getting on sites that have inappropriate materials,

  3. This is such an important consideration. I appreciate you asking.

    1. 21st Century Fluency Project have a thorough resource that you may find helpful.

    2. I have found a step forward is for students to understand what 'Principled' looks and sounds like in teaching and learning.
('Principled' features in the International Baccalaureate Learner profile)
Examples of principled can be found at: http://www.pinterest.com/flyingzigzag/ib-principled/

    3. Keep using open language, encouraging constant opportunity for students to ask questions and where you can explore and be curious together.

All the best - Let us know how you go and do join us on twitter!
